Long Train Ride Tips

When Ro and I visited Paris in September 2023, we decided to visit the South of France via train for a few days.

The train ride was around 5 hours and 30 minutes, so we had plenty of time on this train to sit, think, rest, read, watch tv/movies, and chat.

You absolutely should book your tickets in advance. The price of our tickets were $200, but we got first-class seats on the way back. On a shorter train, I wouldn’t recommend splurging on first-class; however, the seats were larger, more comfortable, and we had charging ports, a table, and it was a nicer experience for the longer ride. I’d say if your train ride is 4+ hours, I would recommend first-class.

Pay attention to your car and seat number because they are assigned usually on trains in Europe.

Our train to Nice did not have a food cart, but our train back did. My number one tip, is to visit a convenience store or small grocery store and stock up on snacks and drinks. I’ve done this on every train ride and it makes it so much easier and convenient. We grabbed baguette sandwiches, waters, cokes, chips, and some fruit and we were satisfied the entire train ride.

Train stations are easier to navigate than airports, but usually have all of the same amenities, and are also prettier :) Give yourself time to get there early, wander, find your hall (like a terminal at an airport) and platform (like your gate at the airport), and get some snacks. You want to also give yourself enough time to board and get comfortable and situated.

There is not a ton of storage space, so be careful about not bringing too much or too big of luggage on-board. Ro and I had a big suitcase and a carry-on, along with our 2 backpacks and it was annoying to carry it around. We didn’t have another option, but I just wish we hadn’t packed so much.

When on a plane, you’re encouraged to stay seated the entire time; however, on a train, you’re more than welcome to wander between the cars. I love getting up and walking around to stretch my legs, look out the windows, and just enjoy the experience.
