In-flight skincare

The friendly skies can definitely be unfriendly, especially to your skin. Your skin goes through so much when you travel. Pollution, dry air, hard water, and sunlight to name a few. To keep your skin in check while traveling, you gotta start a few days before your trip. My skin usually just has some hormonal breakouts, but I know whenever I travel, my skin freaks out! Especially with the hard water in Europe. The main thing is to keep your skin hydrated, so that means drinking lots of water and keeping your skin hydrated. Here are my tips to keep your skin happy while you travel!

  • Fly makeup free. Makeup clogs your pores, so be sure to go onto the plane with clean skin. If you MUST have makeup on, keep it to mascara and maybe a tinted moisturizer. But if you can stand it, don’t wear any makeup.

  • Cleanse. Making sure your skin is clean and ready for the flight is a big one. If you don’t want to wash your face on the plane, wash it in the bathroom right before your flight. Use a gentle or hydrating cleanser for your flight since flights dry your skin out so much. I recommend the ZO Hydrating Cleanser. Follow with a rich oil or a heavier moisturizing cream. We’re trying to create a strong hydrated barrier so your skin doesn’t dry out and break out.

  • Moisturize, do not spray!!! Use a heavier moisturizing cream, DO NOT USE FACIAL SPRAYS. Water acts as a magnet for more water. So if you spray your face on a plane, it will actually attract the moisture in your skin and draw it out, thus drying your skin more. This is something I always see people doing and it is a big no-no for skincare on flights. Same for sheet masks.

  • Wear sunscreen. You should always always always wear sunscreen. I love Elta MD. It doesn’t feel or smell like sunscreen. It’s light, helps with breakouts and hyper-pigmentation, and is something every single person should be wearing every single day. Since you’re in a plane, you are closer to the sun. Especially if you are sitting in a window seat, you absolutely should wear sunscreen.

  • Eye masks and lip balm. The skin around your eyes and your lips are so much thinner than the rest of your face, so these will dry out quicker. Wander beauty has a good eye mask with anti-inflammatory ingredients. If you have an aesthetician though, ask them what they recommend for your skin needs.

  • Teeth whitening. This is also a great time to whiten your teeth! Anything to make the time go by, right?

  • Drink lots and lots and lots of water. You should start drinking a ton of water about 2 days prior to your trip and continue to drink water way more than you normally would throughout your travel.
