My 3 favorite things to do in Venice

I went to Venice July 2014 and ported from there for a cruise through Greece and Montenegro. We spent 2 days in Venice prior to our cruise and it was so beautiful. It is absolutely worth the hype. We went during high season, so I would recommend going early spring or fall when tourism isn’t so crazy. This helps you with prices and also helps the city by giving them tourism dollars all year round! 2 things that shocked me were how quiet it is since there aren’t any cars, and how expensive water taxis are from the airport. The water taxis were around 350 euros… I’ve told people this since my trip when they visit and have encouraged them to book one ahead of time and that helped them save some money. Venice is full of incredible things to do and see and it is one of the few cities I will say that the best thing to do is to wander. Most places I need an itinerary. Venice, I loved to wander around. However, if you’d like some things to add to your list, here are my top 3 things to do:

Harry’s Bar - What an iconic place. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway all hung out here. It is a tiny bar right around the corner from St. Mark’s Square and on the Grand Canal.

Murano - Have you ever heard of Murano glass? It’s made on this tiny island off of Venice and they have a tour you can go on! You can see them blowing glass, visit the gift shops, and learn about the history of Murano glass. One incredible thing I learned was that each family on the island is responsible for a certain type of glass art. For example, one family is responsible for chandeliers while another is responsible for figurines while another makes glasses. Each family also has certain colors they use.

Burano - Another tiny island off of Venice is Burano. Each house is painted a different bright color and it is so beautiful and unlike anything I’ve ever seen. There are also people on this island who make lace, and La Perla often buys lace from these women.
