My Top 3 Experiences in Guatemala

Guatemala offers so many experiences for travelers. I think it is a great combination of Costa Rica and Mexico in terms of what is offered - relaxation, beaches, mountains, hikes, and adventure excursions. I did so much research prior to this trip - specifically for Lake Atitlan and Antigua. Here are my top 3 experiences we did, and I will include other experiences you can do in each place.

Paragliding

This was the one thing I really wanted to try. I tried pushing myself outside of my comfort zone here, and I think I succeeded :) I went with Real World Paragliding and highly highly highly recommend them. They are all professional skydivers and paragliders, and I felt incredibly safe with them. It cost $90 and they drove us up the mountain to the “launch pad,” then set everything up, walked me through everything, and even played music! It was $90USD to paraglide, but I also paid extra ($20) to have photos and videos taken during the flight. I had the best time doing this.

ATV Tour

We went with Simoon Tours and we loved them. Our guide was named Anthony and he was so kind and patient with us. The tour was 5 hours throughout Antigua and we visited an overlook in the mountains, a farm where they make chocolate, honey, and wine, a jade museum and shop, and a textile commune. Then they took us way up the mountain for lunch where I had a delicious soup! When we finished lunch, we were riding back down the mountain and it started pouring down rain. What an experience!

Swimming at La Casa del Mundo

The water here is so clear… I was shocked. It is slightly chilly, but you get used to it very quickly. They have a few grottos and lots of rocks to climb and jump off of or just sunbathe on. I loved swimming here and just felt so free and calm. Also, since La Casa del Mundo is a bit separated from the towns, the water is much calmer here.

Other Experiences to Try

Hobbitenango - A hobbiton in Antigua! They offer a variety of excursions, photo opportunities, and restaurants. Even a hotel and overnight camping!

Yoga - There are plenty of yoga studios and retreats around the lake, though San Marcos seems to be the yoga haven.

Hiking - With so many mountains and volcanoes, you best believe there are tons of hiking options! From easy hikes to overnight volcano hikes!

Boat Tours - I was very close to adding this to my top three, but you’ll have to get on a boat to get to La Casa del Mundo at least, so it’s included!

Cultural Tours - Most towns offer a form of the cultural tours to show you how they make certain things - like coffee, honey, chocolate, textiles, etc.
