How I Reset After My Trips

When I get back from my trips, I usually feel very overwhelmed and not my best. Still very excited from my trip, but feeling like I need to “catch up.”

Prior to my trips, I usually do a lot of “pre work,” like doing a deep clean of my apartment, putting fresh sheets on the bed so I come back to a clean bed, clean out my fridge so I don’t have any stinky food to come back to, and leave my washer and dryer empty.

Here are some things I do after my trips to rest:

Immediately do laundry

  • The very first thing I do after I get home (besides squeeze my kitties) is dump all of my clothes into the washing machine. I hate having a ton of laundry to do and unpacking, so by immediately doing my laundry, this helps me feel so much better and organized post-traveling.

Hydrate!

  • I try to drink as much water as I can while traveling, but I know I am always dehydrated by the time I come back. When I’m home, I try to prioritize drinking as much water as possible, and cutting out alcohol for a bit to give my body a break.

Soothe my belly

  • My belly is very picky, and tends to be troublesome while traveling. When I’m home, I always start my day with a ginger smoothie (I’ll include the recipe below). The ginger really helps soothe my stomach and make me feel so much better. Feel free to add turmeric, beet juice, protein powder, collagen powder, or any additional nutrients you feel you need.

    • Recipe:

      • 1 banana

      • 1/2 cup of almond milk

      • 1 tbsp of fresh ginger (or to taste. I love ginger, so I put more)

      • handful of ice

      • 1 scoop of collagen powder

Get Moving, slowly

  • I love to go on a long walk or take a hot Pilates or Yoga class when I get back to help move my body in a loving way. I tend to walk quite a bit when traveling, much more than when I am home, so I usually come back a little sore, so a hot pilates or yoga class is always a great pick for me.

    • If you’re in Memphis, be sure to check out MindBody Haus :) I am a Pilates instructor here and we have some AMAZING yoga and Pilates classes here!

Grocery Shopping

  • I tend to go grocery shopping on Sundays, like seemingly everyone else. I really try to prioritize especially healthy eating the few weeks after my trip over convenience. After my most recent trip to New Orleans and Miami, I got some ingredients that are already seasoned or easy to cook (like pre-seasoned salmon from The Fresh Market, a rotisserie chicken, kale salads, etc).

REST!

  • My #1 tip is to prioritize rest. I try to give myself at least a one-day buffer between returning from a trip and going back to work so I can completely rest. For me this looks like a Pilates class, a FULL shower (you know what I mean), and then lying in my bed for hours with my cats and watching TV.
